ANGOLA – Steuben County Council members unanimously approved pursuing the Local Option Highway User Tax for Steuben County.
The most Steuben County could charge under the wheel tax is $80 per vehicle, which is what the council approved. They also approved the maximum surtax of $50 per vehicle.
The council must have a first and second reading of the ordinance, as well as a public hearing.
Wheel tax funds can only be used to construct, reconstruct, repair, or maintain streets and roads under the county’s jurisdiction.
If the tax is approved by July 1st, there will not be a significant impact on the 2018 road maintenance season.
The tax is collected when people renew their vehicle registrations, which is spread out over the year.
