STURGIS – Sturgis Public Schools are pursuing tenure charges against Keith Lang.
During their meeting on Monday, the Sturgis Board of Education went into closed session to discuss a personnel matter. Following the closed session, the Board came back into open session and voted unanimously to proceed with tenure charges against Lang, as outlined in the Teacher's Tenure Act.
In a separate motion, the Board of Education also voted unanimously to place Lang's salary into escrow and to discontinue his life insurance and heath insurance benefits.
The 37 year old Lang was arrested in January following allegations that he had a sexual relationship with a student. He faces three counts of fourth degree criminal sexual conduct charges along with other charges.
Under the Teacher's Tenure Act, if criminal charges are filed against a teacher, the Board of Education can place the teacher's salary into an escrow account during a suspension.
Lang is currently on unpaid administrative leave. He is free on a $150,000 bond. Lang waived his preliminary hearing in St. Joseph County District Court.
A status conference will be scheduled for sometime in the next few weeks.
