LAGRANGE – A decision on a controversial proposal to reorganize elementary schools by grade level is possible when the Lakeland School Board meets Monday evening.
The agenda calls for Superintendent Eva Merkel to make a recommendation on the proposed restructuring.
The district conducted an on-line survey in late January and early February on the realignment of the district’s three elementary schools by grade level. Two schools would focus on students in kindergarten through second grade, while the third would house students in grades 3 to 5.
Since then the district has been tallying the responses. While there was some support, there was also considerable opposition, with some saying they would move their children to other districts if the idea is implemented.
Concerns about reduced funding prompted the proposal as a means to avoid cutting teachers. A referendum to increase local property taxes might also be possible.
Monday’s meeting begins at 6:30 p-m at Parkside Elementary School.
