Wednesday, February 20, 2019

MIDDLEBURY – A student from Jefferson Elementary School was arrested Tuesday after bringing a gun to school and showing it to classmates.

Middlebury Community Schools Superintendent Jane Allen released a statement says,"Our students are regularly taught the principle ‘see something, say something.' That lesson paid off.”

Parents were told of the incident by telephone and social media.

The release said "Middlebury Community Schools will not tolerate such activity. Appropriately severe student discipline and judicial punishment will be sought and imposed."

State law says a student who has a gun on school property must be expelled for a calendar year. Possession of a gun on school property or a school bus is a felony that carries a prison sentence of one to six years and a fine of up to $10,000.
