Warning issued after four fall through ice in NE Indiana
Monday, January 21, 2019

UNDATED – Officers are warning folks to stay off the ice after four Indiana fisherman reportedly fell through the ice last week.

Conservation Officers responded to Crooked Lake in Noble County for reports of two ice fishermen who fell through the ice just before 3 p.m. Sunday.

Both fishermen were able to pull themselves from the ice and were transported to an area hospital for treatment for hypothermia.

That followed the Saturday drowning of 45-year-old Robert Penland of Pleasant Lake at Terry Lake in DeKalb County.

Last Wednesday, former DeKalb County Commissioner Randall Deetz was rescued after falling through the ice on a private pond.

In a Facebook post, officials say lakes and ponds have not yet had adequate time to freeze.

“There are no fish swimming in any of our public freshwater lakes that are worth risking your life and the life of the first responders that will come to your rescue if you happen to fall through,” the post read.
