GOSHEN – The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a traffic stop involving off-duty police officers.

A Goshen Police officer made a traffic stop Friday at 1:43 AM in the area of US 33 and County Road 17. Just prior to the traffic stop, Goshen City Police Officer Jon McKalips heard what he suspected as being gunfire coming from the vehicle.

After the vehicle was stopped it the Goshen officer learned that the three occupants were off duty police officers; two officers from the Goshen City Police Department and one officer from the Elkhart City Police Department.

The driver of the vehicle – 24-year-old Brody Brown of Elkhart – was arrested for operating while intoxicated. Brown has been and officer with Goshen City Police Department for two-and-a-half years. Goshen City Police Department requested the sheriff’s department investigate the issue surrounding alleged gunfire.

Brown and the other Goshen officer in the vehicle are now on administrative leave. Goshen Mayor Jeremy Stutsman said Officer McKalips was placed in a tough situation and showed great integrity in making the arrest. The names of the officers are being withheld during the investigation. Investigators expect to provide an update early next week.
