Indiana near bottom in political engagement
Friday, October 19, 2018

UNDATED – With generally poor voter turnout and below average voter accessibility policies, Indiana ranks fourth lowest in the nation in a new ranking of political engagement.

The analysis by Wallet Hub considered those factors along with political contributions per capita, civic education, voter accessibility policies and more in determining its ranking.

Only three states: Alabama, Hawaii and New Mexico ranked lower than Indiana.

For residents age 18-24 who actually vote, Indiana’s 43% put it in the middle of the pack, while the state’s 67.7% of elderly residents voting ranked 38th.

Of the factors that affect participation rates, income is an important one, with implications for both voter turnout and public policy. Persons with family incomes of $150,000 or more voted 80% of the time, while persons with incomes less than $10,000 vote just 41.4% of the time.
