Auburn woman killed in crash near Waterloo

WATERLOO – An elderly woman died Wednesday night after a crash involving two vehicles.

The DeKalb County Sheriff's Department says it happened around 6:45 p.m. at County Road 16 and State Road 427 near Waterloo.

88-year-old Phyllis Reardon of Auburn was pronounced dead at the scene. Reardon was on County Road 16 when she failed to heed the stop sign at the intersection of 427. Reardon then T-boned a pickup driven by 40-year-old John Bassett of Butler.

The impact sent Bassett’s vehicle careening off the roadway. Reardon's SUV spun around and came to a stop in the middle of the road, according to police.

Bassett was transported to a Fort Wayne hospital by helicopter for treatment was later listed in stable condition.
