Murder trial adjourns early for the weekend

LAGRANGE – The murder trial for a Lagrange man adjourned for the weekend early Friday afternoon.

35-year-old Brian Combs is on trial in LaGrange Superior Court for the murder of Clayton Rust of Angola. Rust died days after being beaten by Combs – who came home unexpectedly and found Rust in bed with Combs’ girlfriend.

Chief Deputy Prosecutor Travis Glick rested the state’s case on Friday.

Defense Attorney Thomas Leatherman called two witnesses before the trial adjourned for the weekend around 12:30 p-m.

The defense attorney is attempting to show Combs acted under sudden heat – a legal concept that prevents premeditation – and that the jury should return a verdict of manslaughter instead.

Leatherman is expected to call two or three more witnesses when the case resumes on Monday. It’s anticipated that the defense will then rest and closing arguments will follow.

The case might go to the jury on Monday.
