TOPEKA – Two people died when a car struck the buggy they were riding in early Saturday morning near Topeka.
The dead were identified as 44-year-old Velda Miller and her 15-year-old daughter Melissa Jo Miller of rural Ligonier. Both died at the scene.
46-year-old Ervin Miller was also a passenger in the buggy and was taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center by ambulance for a neck injury.
Police say the car that struck them was driven by 21-year-old Jazieel Leon-Galvan of South Bend. He was taken to Parkview LaGrange Hospital with stomach pain.
The LaGrange County Sheriff's Department said alcohol was a factor in the crash but charges are awaiting a review by prosecutors.
The crash happened at 5:26 a-m in front of 5185 West County Road 800 South.
