School takeovers highlight special session

INDIANAPOLIS – Lawmakers ordered the take over of school districts in Muncie and Gary during a one-day special session of the General Assembly on Monday.

It appoints Ball State University to operate Muncie Schools and removes more authority of the Gary School Board.

Democrats said the legislation was hasty, punitive and unneeded. But Republicans approved the bill 34-14 in the Senate and 63-30 in the House.

It now goes to Governor Holcomb, who is expected to sign it.
