Officer's names released in Garrett shooting


GARRETT – State Police released the names of the two officers involved in a shooting Tuesday night in Garrett.

53-year-old DeKalb County Sheriff’s Deputy Todd McCormick suffered gunshot wounds to both hands and was hospitalized overnight before being released Wednesday afternoon.

Garrett Officer Alicia Castro, who is 25, initiated the traffic stop and was not injured.

State Police investigating the incident are not releasing details of what happened. All we know is that Castro stopped a vehicle on Hampshire Street in Garrett and McCormick arrived as back up. At some point McCormick and a person in the vehicle exchanged gunfire.

The suspect’s name has not been released. At last report they were hospitalized in critical condition.

McCormick is a nine year veteran of the sheriff’s department while Castro has been on the Garrett Police Department four months.

A report on the investigation will be sent to the
DeKalb County prosecutor for possible charges.
