Arrest made in robbery

COLDWATER – Police arrested a suspect in a January armed robbery.

Coldwater Police arrested 25 year old Peter Berry of Chicago on Saturday in connection with a January 21 robbery at the Coldwater Inn and Suites.

Director of Public Safety Mark Bartell says a complaint was called in to his department about possible drug use at a house on Morse Street. Officers arrived at the house, which is where Berry's grandmother lives, and found Berry asleep on the floor.

The robbery happened during a party at the motel. The victim, a 21 year old man from Kalamazoo, was at the party and tied to a chair before being assaulted and having his tennis shoes stolen.

The victim was taken to the then Community Health Center of Branch County to be treated for injuries to his face and chest. The man told police what happened at the party.

The victim later saw Berry with his shoes and contacted police. Officers say a witness to the robbery identified Berry to them and an arrest warrant was obtained.

Branch County District Court personnel say Berry was arraigned and bond is set at $35,000. He is scheduled to have a probable cause hearing on March 20.
