Coldwater HS senior charged with threat

COLDWATER – An incident that happened in February led to the arrest of a Coldwater High School student.

Coldwater Director of Public Safety Mark Bartell says his department was contacted on March 2 by the Coldwater Community Schools. School officials say the complaint stemmed from a verbal altercation between two students that actually happened on February 22 while the individuals were on a school bus. At that time an inappropriate and threatening statement was made to one student, and then a more general statement about harming others was made.

Bartell says his department investigated the allegations, and a report was sent to the Branch County Prosecutor's Office. After reviewing the report, a charge of ethnic intimidation was authorized against 18 year old Jay Allen Neusbaum III, a senior at Coldwater High School.

Officers arrested Neusbaum Thursday and he was later arraigned. Branch County District Court officials say Neusbaum had his bond set at $25,000 and was ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim.

A probable cause hearing was set for March 15.
