Police find marijuana in vehicle following chase

MENDON TOWNSHIP – The driver of a vehicle is in custody after leading police on a chase Sunday night.

The St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department attempted to stop a pickup for a registration violation just before 10 PM Sunday on Heimbach Road near Angevine Road in Mendon Township. The vehicle fled from deputies and led them on a pursuit that lasted 10 minutes.

The driver abandoned the vehicle in the area of North Fisher Lake and Lowe Roads and fled on foot. Deputies, with the help of Three Rivers K-9 Officer Jake, apprehended the driver a shot time later.

A search of the suspect's vehicle uncovered marijuana.

The suspect has been charged with fleeing and eluding; resisting and obstructing police and possession of marijuana.

Assisting at the scene were the Three Rivers Fire Department and Michigan State Police.
