Recycling fire belches heavy smoke near Waterloo


WATERLOO – Flames and heavy black smoke greeted motorists on I-69 near Waterloo Monday afternoon.

The fire was at MetalX – a recycling company located on Commerce Drive next to I-69.

The fire was reported around 12:30 p-m and multiple departments from DeKalb and Noble Counties responded to the scene.

The company issued a news release just after 2 p-m saying the fire appeared to be under control.

It began in a pile of scrap metal near a shredder.

No injuries were reported.

The company says it does not accept hazardous materials.
