Vehicle strikes, kills man in Cass County

POKAGON TOWNSHIP – An Elkhart man is dead after being struck by a vehicle in Cass County, Michigan's Pokagon Township.

The Sheriff's Department was called to M-51 near Pokagon Highway on Sunday and were told a person had been hit by a car. Deputies arrived and found 53 year old Howard Payton had been struck and died from the injuries he sustained.

The driver was heading southwest on M-51 when the collision happened. Her name has not been released at this time because she is a minor. She was treated and released at the scene by the Southwest Michigan Community Ambulance Service.

Deputies say she was wearing her safety belt at the time of the incident, which remains under investigation.

Also assisting at the scene were the Pokagon Fire Department, the Pokagon Band Tribal Police and the Michigan State Police.
