Woman Arrested Following Crash on Toll Road

The Indiana State Police investigated a single vehicle crash early Sunday morning on the Indiana Toll Road which resulted in the arrest of 22 year old Brittany L. Lockhart of LaPorte, Indiana.

The investigation conducted by Trooper Andrew Baldwin indicated that at approximately 12:44 a.m. Lockhart was attempting to enter the Toll Road and head west from the Toll Plaza at State Road 9 in Howe. Lockhart failed to safely negotiate a tight curve and instead, drove her vehicle southbound across the westbound lanes, into the median and across the eastbound lanes.

She then somehow made a u-turn and drove back north across the eastbound lanes before stopping in the median. When Baldwin arrived at the crash scene, he found Lockhart laying on the ground unconscious next to her vehicle. Baldwin was able to get Lockhart to regain consciousness and he also smelled a strong odor of alcoholic beverages coming from Lockhart’s breath.

Further investigation by Baldwin revealed that Lockhart had been operating with a breath alcohol content almost three times the legal limit of .08% and that she had also been using a controlled substance earlier in the day.

Lockhart was transported to Parkview Lagrange Hospital via ambulance for treatment of minor injuries before being released to Baldwin’s custody. She was taken to and incarcerated in the LaGrange County Jail on the preliminary chargesof Operating While Intoxicated, Greater than .15%, Class A Misdemeanor, Operating with a Schedule 1 Controlled Substance in the Body, Class C Misdemeanor, and Operating a Vehicle with an Altered Interim License Plate, Class C Misdemeanor.

The accident remains under investigation.
