Field of Dreams remains contentious

CENTREVILLE – The “Field Of Dreams” Sports Complex was a topic of conversation during Tuesday's County Commission meeting.

Lockport Township resident Charlene Zavala spoke during the Citizen Comments portion of the meeting, and thanked the Commissioners for filing a lawsuit against the City of Three Rivers. She is hoping this lawsuit with make Three Rivers look at a different piece of land instead of the parcel in Lockport Township for the multi-sport complex.

St. Joseph County filed a lawsuit last week against Three Rivers concerning the validity of a contract between the two entities. It claims that Three Rivers violated the terms of their agreement with the county.

The county agreed to give $2.8 million to help with the construction of a sports complex along Enterprise Drive, east of North Main Street in Lockport Township. To date, they have given Three Rivers $775,000 to purchase the property.

Jared Hoffmaster, one of the organizers of the project, says despite everything that has happened, there are still people who support the the construction of the complex.

Lockport Township Treasurer Mike Freisner says he agrees with Hoffmaster that this complex would be good for the area. He just thinks it needs to be in another location.
