Man burned trying to oust bees

SILVER CREEK TOWNSHIP – A Dowagiac man's method for exterminating a bee hive got him into trouble.

Cass County Sheriff's Deputies were sent to the 28,000 block of Middle Crossing Road on a report of a man on fire. Officers arrived and found 46 year old Leslie Cross II had been on fire, but a neighbor helped extinguish the flames.

Cross says he was attempting to exterminate a bee hive under ground when he accidentally caught himself on fire.

He was flown to the burn center at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo by Memorial Medflight Helicopter. Assisting at the scene were the Indian Lakes Fire Department, Pokagon Tribal Police, Michigan State Police and Pride Care Ambulance.

The incident remains under investigation.
