Trooper gets school bus signs along U-S 20

MIDDLEBURY – An Indiana trooper’s quest to make Elkhart County roads safer for school buses resulted in some new signs being posted.

Middlebury Police Officer Jeremy Schotts contacted Trooper Jim Zeser about drivers not stopping with buses on the new stretch of U-S 20 between State Road 15 and the 20 bypass. That road was widened to four lanes plus a center turn lane.

Schotts told Zeser that opposite direction traffic and some same direction traffic were not stopping when buses stopped last spring.

Zeser contacted INDOT which put up four new signs saying all lanes stop when school bus stops.

Indiana law requires all lanes to stop unless there is a physical barrier or undeveloped median.
