Trial off as Ashley man pleads in fatal crash

ANGOLA — An Ashley man pleaded guilty in connection with a fatal crash, cancelling a trial slated to last throughout this week in Steuben Circuit Court.

38-year-old Chet Gilbert admitted to causing serious injury operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, a Level 6 felony, during a hearing Thursday morning.

The original charge, a Level 4 felony could have resulted in up to a 12-year prison sentence. A Level 6 felony carries a maximum jail term of 2 1/2 years.

Gilbert was driving a 2012 Dodge Journey on June 21, 2015, when it struck the rear of 1987 Harley-Davidson motorcycle driven by 52-year-old Brian Platten of York, Ontario. The crash occurred on I-69 about three miles north of Ashley.
