(STURGIS) – It was an early start to the day Friday for the Sturgis Fire Department.

Deputy Director of Public Safety Andy Strudwick says the Fire Department was called out at 5 AM to the 500 block of Michigan Avenue for a structure fire. Arriving units found a single family dwelling with flames coming out of the attic. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other areas of the house.

While still at the Michigan Avenue location, Strudwick says his department was called to the 300 block of South Monroe Street for another fire. Crews arrived and found a single family dwelling with heavy fire coming from a bedroom. This fire was also brought under control in a short amount of time, and didn't spread to other areas of the house.

Strudwick says the families in both homes were able to get out safely, thanks in part to working smoke detectors.

Causes for the fires have not been determined. The Tri Township Fire Department and the Sturgis Electric Department assisted at the scene.
