(STURGIS) – Thursday was a busy day for the Sturgis Police Department.

At 6:30 AM, officers were called to investigate a suspicious vehicle in the 200 block of Second Street. Officers were able to locate and stop the vehicle in the area of St. Joseph Street. The driver fled from police and after a brief pursuit, crashed on the railroad tracks near the intersection of North Nottawa and Hatch Streets.

The driver ran away from the scene. A K-9 police officer was brought in, but was not able to locate the suspect. Michigan State Police and the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department assisted at the scene.

A short time later, in an unrelated incident, Michigan State Police were contacted about a car that crashed into a building in the 1300 block of East Chicago Road. During that incident, two cars were stolen from the property. One of the vehicles was recovered just outside of the city by State Police, and a man was arrested and taken to the St. Joseph County Jail.

The second stolen vehicle was recovered in the 1800 block of South Centreville Road. The second suspect abandoned the car and stole another vehicle from South Centreville Road. The second suspect was located and arrested in the Burr Oak area by the Sheriff's Department and Michigan state Police.

All of the stolen vehicles were recovered and returned to their owners.

Due to the nature, location and time frame of both incidents, Sturgis Public Schools were notified and took appropriate actions to ensure the safety of students.
