Sunday House Fire On Shadyside Road
By: Sheila McCrea - Sunday, December 12, 2021

Occupants of a home were able to escape without injury following a weekend fire in Steuben County.

The Angola Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire on Sunday. Crews were sent to 3710 West Shadyside Road just after 11 a.m.

Angola Assistant Fire Chief Bill Harter said first units on the scene found the 4,000 square foot single-story home on a full finished basement heavily involved with flames and smoke. Harter said it took fire crews a little over an hour to bring the blaze under control.

All occupants of the home, owned by Thomas G. Shuford, were able to escape without injuries. Reports also indicate no firefighters were injured.

Harter said there was an estimated $623,900 in structural loss, and an additional $150,000 in property damage. The fire was ruled as accidental.

Mutual aid was requested from Fire Departments from Fremont, Steuben Township, Orland, Ashley-Hudson, and Hamilton. Other agencies at the scene were Steuben County E.M.S. and the Steuben County Sheriff Department who shut down and blocked the road off. NIPSCO was also requested to secure the utilities.
