(WAYNE TOWNSHIP) – One person was injured when the vehicle they were riding in crashed over the weekend.

The Cass County Sheriff's Department says 22 year old Melissa Smith of Decatur was driving in the area of Marcellus Highway and Atwood Road in Wayne Township at 5 AM Saturday. Smith's vehicle went off the road and struck a tree head on.

A passenger in the automobile, 36 year old Tasha Wallace of Dowagiac was taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital to be treated for her injuries.

Deputies say it is not known at this time if either occupant were wearing their safety belts, and alcohol or drugs may have been a factor in the crash. The case is still under investigation.

Assisting at the scene were the Wayne Township and Dowagiac Fire Departments along with Pride Care Ambulance Service.
