(INDIANAPOLIS) – Former Indiana First Lady Susan Bayh passed away Friday night at the age of 61.

Her husband, former Indiana Senator and Governor Evan Bayh shared the news of his wife's passing in a Facebook post Saturday night. She had battled brain cancer since 2015, when she was diagnosed and first underwent surgery. In May 2018, she was diagnosed with a malignant glioblastoma, which led to multiple surgeries along with radiation and immunotherapy treatments. This is the same type of aggressive brain cancer that killed Arizona Senator John McCain in 2018.

Susan Bayh grew up in California and met Evan Bayh while they were both working in Washington in the early 1980's. They were married in 1985.

Susan Bayh was an attorney, who drew criticism for her membership on several corporate boards while her husband held elected offices.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb issued a statement, saying he and his wife were saddened to learn about the passing of Susan Bayh. Holcomb says she was an extraordinary and radiant public servant, wife, mother and friend, who leaves a remarkable impact on not only the State of Indiana, but the nation.

Holcomb is calling on all Hoosiers to join him in praying for the Bayh family.
