(INDIANAPOLIS) – The State of Indiana is taking some steps back to help fight the coronavirus pandemic.

On Thursday, Governor Eric Holcomb announced that Indiana is moving out of Stage 5 of their reopening plan and will bring back some restrictions. This comes after weeks of surging case numbers around the Hoosier State and hospitals treating more patients than in previous months.

Just two months ago, the State of Indiana's metrics had many counties in blue, which means low community spread of COVID-19. As of Thursday, the majority of counties were in orange or red, meaning community spread of the virus is now rampant. LaGrange County is the only Northeast Indiana county in red. Elkhart County is expected to move to red next week.

Starting on Sunday, in all red counties, gatherings will be limited to 25 people; local health officials can limit business hours and only players and parents can attend indoor sporting events.

In orange counties, businesses can stay open, but all social gatherings are limited to 50 people. Indoor sporting events will be limited to 25 percent capacity.

Indiana State Health Commissioner Dr. Kristina Box says one way or another, things will shut down and decrease if proactive steps are not taken now.

Holcomb's Executive Order does exempt churches, but with a warning that they are one of the top places where the virus is spreading.
