Fire Destroys Constantine Home
By: Mike Stiles - Saturday, October 31, 2020

(CONSTANTINE) – A Wednesday night fire destroyed a Constantine home.

Constantine Fire Chief Mike Hayden says his department was called Wednesday at 10:42 PM to the 600 block of Water Street. The homeowner smelled smoke and while investigating discovered their back porch was on fire. They tried to put out the blaze with a garden hose, but the fire spread too quickly.

It took firefighters three hours to extinguish the blaze, based on the way the house was built. One Constantine Police officer was treated and released for smoke inhalation.

The house and its contents are considered a total loss. Hayden says a cause for the fire is still unknown.

The Fabius-Park Fire Department, Constantine and White Pigeon Police Departments and Life Care Ambulance assisted at the scene. St. Joseph County Victim Service along with the Red Cross helped the family find a place to stay.
