(MILTON TOWNSHIP) – A two vehicle crash claimed the life of a Niles woman.

Cass County Sheriff Richard Behnke says his department was called to U.S. 12 at the M-60 interchange in Milton Township. At 10:20 AM Wednesday, a vehicle driven by 90 year old Patricia McIntyre of Niles attempted to make a left turn onto U.S. 12, and entered into the path of an eastbound vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle, 23 year old Cody Cummings of Benton Harbor struck McIntyre's automobile on the driver's side, disabling both vehicles.

McIntyre was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cummings' auto started on fire, and was put out by other drivers. Cummings and his passengers, two children ages 5 and 7, were helped out of the vehicle and taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Everyone involved was wearing their seat belts.

Assisting deputies were the Michigan State Police, the Niles Township Fire Department, the Edwardsburg Ambulance and the SMACS Ambulance along with the Michigan Department of Transportation.

The crash is still under investigation.
