Michigan's Jobless Rate Down Slightly In May

(LANSING) - Michigan's seasonally adjusted jobless rate dropped slightly for the month of May.

The Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget, says the May unemployment rate around the state was 21.2 percent, down 2.8 percent from April. Employment in Michigan rose by 256,000 in May, but remained over 1 million below February levels. The number of unemployed declined by 97,000, following almost a 900,000 increase in April. The Michigan labor force in May registered a significant gain of 159,000.

Jason Palmer, Director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives, says the May job market was marked by two primary trends. First was a continuation of record high unemployment. The other was job gains resulting from initial recalls from pandemic related layoffs.

During May, the largest growth was in construction which increased by 52 percent. The biggest drop was in Natural Resources and Mining which went down by 28.6 percent.
