(ELKHART) – One person is dead following a crash between two vehicles.

Elkhart County Sheriff Jeff Siegel says his deputies attempted to stop a vehicle for an equipment violation at 9:38 Monday morning on County Road 7, just north of County Road 6. The suspect vehicle drove away, accelerating to a high rate of speed.

The suspect vehicle crossed a double yellow line and passed three vehicles on County Road 7. As it approached DI Drive, it collided with a semi that was making a left turn.

A passenger in the suspect vehicle, a 40 year old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is not being released until family can be notified.

The driver of the vehicle, 53 year old Roger Rhodes, was taken to Elkhart General Hospital to be treated for internal injuries. Deputies discovered that Rhodes had valid warrants for escape from work release; theft and operating after forfeiture of license. Rhodes is also a habitual traffic violator for life.

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit was called in to investigate the incident due to the fatality and an officer being involved in the incident. The Indiana State Police were asked to perform the crash reconstruction portion of the investigation.
