By: Mike Stiles - Tuesday, April 7, 2020

(LANSING) – Unemployment figures went down from January to February around Southwest Michigan.

Recent information released by the Department of Technology, Management and Budget shows that St. Joseph County's unemployment rate went down from 4.3 percent in January to 3.2 percent in February. That was the largest drop in the area, at 1.1 percent.

Branch County dropped from an even 4 percent to 3.3 percent (.7). Cass County went from a January unemployment figure of 4.7 percent to 3.9 percent (.8) in February. Hillsdale County also dropped, going from 4.4 percent to 3.6 percent (.8).

Overall, the State of Michigan saw a drop in unemployment, going from a January figure of 4.3 percent to 3.6 percent in February.

According to Jason Palmer, Director of the Bureau Of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives, February's monthly regional labor market movements were mainly seasonal. Payroll job gains were largely observed in the State's government sector as local schools and universities returned from break.

Palmer says the February estimates do not reflect the recent impact on local jobs due to the coronavirus pandemic.
