Police arrest dozens for underage drinking

SHIPSHEWANA – It was a party weekend in the Shipshewana area...and police dropped by.

Two large underage drinking parties ended with dozens of people jailed or released to parents.

The first happened Saturday evening. LaGrange County deputies responded to a complaint of loud music and underage drinking at 9130 West County Road 360 North. They say more than 250 people were at that location and fled from the residence. Deputies caught seven of them between the ages of 18 and 21.

Myron Herschberger, Dennis Bontrager and Dale Miller of Shipshewana were charged with contributing to the delinquency of minors and minor consuming alcohol.

Less than three hours later deputies were called to 3485 North County Road 795 West for a noise complaint. Again they found a large party with minors drinking.

Sixteen juveniles were taken into custody and later released to parents or guardians.

Fifteen adults were charged with minor in possession. 46-year-old Timothy Hostetler of Shipshewana was charged with contributing to the delinquency of minors.

Most of the minors arrested were from Shipshewana, Topeka, Middlebury and Ligonier.
