BRISTOL – The driver of a semi escaped with minor injuries after his tractor plunged from an overpass on the Toll Road near Bristol this morning.

Indiana State Troopers responded to a crash at the 102 mile marker westbound around 5:30.

Trooper Adam Kitson says a Freightliner towing double trailers was westbound when it lost control near the 102 mile marker. It left the roadway to the left, crashing through a guardrail and striking a concrete barrier wall. The cab of the Freightliner broke free from the double trailers, traveled down the steep embankment, coming to rest on the passenger side on the railroad tracks below. The trailers slid down the concrete barrier wall and came to a rest hanging on the edge of the overpass.

40-year-old Jesus Zeigler of Richton Park, IL, was able to get out of the semi by climbing out of the windshield. Zeigler was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash which likely saved him from serious injuries. Zeigler was transported to Elkhart General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The left lane of the Indiana Toll Road remained closed for several hours for clean-up and vehicle removal.
