Commissioners reject accessory building / home business zoning changes
By: Tim Murray - Monday, December 30, 2019

LAGRANGE – None of the 21 changes to Lagrange County’s zoning ordinance won approval from LaGrange County Commissioners Monday morning...although the bulk of them could still do so.

There was little doubt that the change restricting accessory buildings would go down to defeat. It did, along with a change in home based businesses, by a vote of 3-0. The accessory building changes brought out a standing room only crowd during a public hearing earlier this month and was universally opposed.

A change regulating retaining walls came from the plan commission with an unfavorable recommendation and was rejected by the commissioners 2-0.

The remaining 18 changes came with a favorable recommendation from the plan commission. Many were merely changes to reflect new terminology.

But the one that held them all up was a change lowering the number of animals allowed in a calf-feeding operation before they would have to comply with the C-F-O standards.

Commissioner Dennis Kratz said he wants to talk with more people about that one...but Commissioner Terry Martin disagreed.

"I don't see a problem with it, but that's just me. They went through it and that's what they came up with. I can see why they did that but I don't think it's really going to affect anybody that much," Martin said.

Commission President Larry Miller took Kratz’s side, saying they have 60 days in which to act on the proposed changes. The vote to table action was 2-to-1.
