Constantine approves appointment of clerk, treasurer

CONSTANTINE – The Village of Constantine now has the ability to appoint a Clerk and a Treasurer instead of having these positions elected.

Village Manager Mark Honeysett brought this idea to the Village Council in early October. Following a public hearing during their October 21 meeting, the matter was brought up for a vote and the Council approved it unanimously.

In the past, people who ran for these positions were not always qualified, yet were elected. Honeysett says by appointing people to the positions of Clerk and Treasurer, they will hopefully find people who are well qualified.

Honeysett says this proposal is being brought before the Village Council because if you don't have anyone run, you need to appoint someone. That has happened in the past.

Honeysett says in small communities these kinds of elections can be popularity contests and not about electing the person who has the ability to do the job.

Honeysett says Village Clerk Myra Mathers and Treasurer Jan Rimer have not said anything about stepping down, but if they ever did, then the process is in place to find their replacements.
