Town says leaf pickup depends on compost site

LAGRANGE – Rain drops won’t be the only thing falling today.

A lot of leaves will come down as well...and they have to go somewhere.

That’s one of the reasons the Town of LaGrange is questioning why the Northeast Indiana Solid Waste Management District wants to move its compost site from the fairgrounds to its convenience station on 300 South.

LaGrange Town Manager Mark Eagleson says moving it that far from town will create an untenable situation for leaf pickup and disposal for the town.

"It will have a serious impact on our leaf pickup. For one, if people can't take it out we're going to have far more along the streets. But more specifically even if we can work out an arrangement for us to have 24/7 access out there, the problem is those leaf vacs are so heavy, and you're talking up to a seven mile turn depending on where you are in town, if we have to put in that additional distance it will be a solid month of sun up to sun down seven days a week to ever come close to pulling that off."

Not only will the town have to haul leaves a lot farther, but residents who drop off their own leaves and limbs will have farther to go and face inconvenient hours.

"I'm not exactly sure how you take something that basically for the most part managed itself and is available 24/7 365 [days] to currently those hours out there are 8 to 4 Tuesday and Thursday and 8 to noon on Saturday."

The Solid Waste District says the fairgrounds site is plagued by problems such as a high water table.
