MIDDLEBURY – An 8-year-old Sturgis girl was seriously injured in a crash near Middlebury Saturday afternoon.

Evelyn Fuentes of the 69-thousand block of Eisenhower Road Sturgis was taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend with a head injury. Police say she was not wearing a seat belt and was unconscious following the crash.

Evelyn was a passenger in a car driven by 31-year-old Hector Garcia of Sturgis that was westbound on County Road 10 and failed to stop at the intersection of State Road 13. It drove under the axle of a northbound box truck.

Deputies cited Garcia for failure to stop and driving without insurance.

Garcia and the truck driver were not injured.
