(CENTREVILLE) – Authorities have determined the cause of the fire at Barn #42 Saturday at the St. Joseph County Fairgrounds.

Centreville Fire Chief David Miracle says their investigation determined the fire started by a power line coming from the power pole to the weather head on the building. The power line shorted out, causing arching and sparking, which in turn caused the barn roof to catch on fire.

Miracle says because of the high winds Saturday afternoon, the fire spread quickly across the tar coated roof.

Damage estimates are at $2.8 million for the barn and its contents, which includes 26 boats and trailers that were being stored inside.

In addition, Barns #41 and #43 both have minor damage due to the heat. There was also damage to two large trees along with power and internet connections.

Barn #42 is a commercial barn. It’s only used during the Fair for businesses to set up and show their products to the public.

Mindy Timm, St. Joseph County Grange Fair Board Secretary told Swick Broadcasting it was a big shock when she found out about the fire Saturday afternoon. ...... {LISTEN}.

Timm says all of the events scheduled at the Fairgrounds, including the 2024 Fair, will be happening. ...... {LISTEN}.

In a media release, Fair Manager Christina Yunker says the Fairgrounds will continue to be closed until clean up is finished for everyone’s safety and security. She says the goal is to restore normalcy as quickly as possible.
